![]() ![]() This last trait was unexpected because she often seems like an ox trampling unemotionally through life. I was hoping the author would slowly reveal some of those personality traits as she told each separate vignette, but what she revealed was a woman who had alienated her son, isn’t grateful enough for being married to a good man, and is terrified about living and dying alone. It’s not that she is intentionally cruel or anything, but she is mostly lacking compassion, kindness, warmth, and humor, so it was hard to read a whole book about her. Okay, maybe what didn’t work for me was the character of Olive. It’s an unusual approach to character development that kind of worked for me and kind of didn’t. Olive Kitteridge is a Pulitzer Prize winner that tells the story of an aging retired school teacher through a series of short stories, many of which just mention Olive in passing. ![]()

Mullan plays Dad, while Dance is playing Jacob, Lea’s father. The only thing standing between John and his destiny are Lea, a woman facing hardship with a great deal of strength, and her son Caleb, a curious, pure-hearted boy. To escape from his family, John heads north and takes refuge deep in the forest near an isolated village. The film follows John - a man on the run because he has betrayed his powerful crime-lord father, Dad. ![]() ![]() ![]() Here everything is much more direct, and there is a charmingly ingenuous approach to sex and desire in general. These are poems about illegitimate births, exiled knights, chivalrous deeds and hidden love-affairs – and yet despite all these plot devices, they have very little in common with the kind of adventure romances that would develop later. That's why forms like lais and fabliaux are so appealing: short, narrative works, with lots of dirty jokes and direct explanations. The big Arthurian cycles and the long poems of people like Wace or Chrétien de Troyes – I can only deal with them in small doses. ![]() ![]() Now, I really like Old French and Anglo-Norman poetry, but some of the classics are so long that reading them seems pretty daunting. Marie was probably attached to the court of Henry II (who, I need scarcely remind you, was himself French and spoke no English), but apart from that we really know nothing about her except what can be gleaned from her poetry. Probably England: she writes in Anglo-Norman, which is an important language for anyone interested in the history of English because it's the source of so many borrowings. ![]() Marie de France was an aristocratic twelfth-century poet, from whose name we conclude that she was apparently living somewhere other than France when she wrote her most famous works. ![]() ![]() ![]() The biggest of these shows is the titular Running Man, in which an average citizen is given a small amount of cash, a passport, and a 12 hour headstart before a group of professional assassins starts to hunt them. In The Running Man, people are invited to become part of brutal reality shows where they can bet their lives in exchange for huge money prizes. While we are not quite there yet, we can't say King completely misses the mark with his dystopia, as many of the issues he explores are indeed part of today's world. In this system, violence and entertainment are tools used by the elites to foment dissent among the oppressed, so that they never even think about the possibility of rebelling. ![]() That's because in The Running Man, democracy was replaced with an authoritarian system designed to keep people in line, as social inequality creates an unbridgeable gap between the wealthy minority and the poor masses. The book imagines what life would look like in 2025, and King was not kind to American society. Written by King under the Richard Bachman pseudonym, The Running Man novel was first released in 1982. ![]() ![]() ![]() I highly recommend keeping tabs, post-its, and maybe a notebook around so you can keep track of all of your theories and ideas (because believe me, you will have them). But the payoff is fantastic, and Harrow the Ninth is on track to earn the entirely made up title of being my favorite read of 2022.Īs you would expect from the title, the central character of this book is Harrow Nonagesimus, and it is a GIANT maze of intrigue and mystery. This review is going to sound vague and confusing, because I’m trying to avoid spoilers and the book is confusing. Things happen and there’s a problem to solve, a big-bad to defeat, but who actually is the big bad? I’ve read the book and I couldn’t tell you for sure. The best I can come up with is: Harrow is on a giant space station which might be haunted, and everything she remembers (about her life and the events of Gideon the Ninth) just isn’t true. Normally I like to open my reviews with a brief summary, but I just can’t give a summary of this book without spoiling Gideon the Ninth. ![]() Harrow the Ninth by Tamsyn Muir (Book Review) ![]() ![]() “If you are saving lives for a very small amount of money, people should feel good about that,” Gates says emphatically, protesting at current cynicism about international aid organisations. The UK, Sweden and Norway are among the few reaching the UN aid spending target of 0.7% of gross national income, and all feel the cold blast of an anti-foreigner political grudge. Yet it is so: the world has never seen such a rapid rise in prosperity among most of the poor.Įager to encourage western countries to keep giving aid, Gates is well aware that Britain – as elsewhere – suffers frequent political attacks on its aid budget. The upbeat message of Gates – as well as those in his late friend Hans Rosling’s book Factfulness, and Steven Pinker’s Enlightenment Now – telling us most of the world is on an unprecedented upswing, jars with our reality. ![]() Today, the west takes some persuading that things are getting better, especially in Europe where countries like Britain have suffered a decade of falling real living standards and eye-watering austerity.
